What To Do In San Francisco?
The first time I ever saw San Fran in person, it made me think of New York City with all of the buildings and taxis. I call it, the New York of the West Coast. There’s not really another city along the Pacific that has the same set up. You can literally not have to drive a car at all in San Francisco as the public transportation is great. There is the famous, well known street cars that I suggest you ride at least once while you’re in town. Then of course you have taxis and also what’s called the Bart. The Bart train wraps around the Bay area so if you need to head over to Oakland or say Hayward, this is a very good option to take. Not expensive and usually quicker because there’s no traffic to deal with. Uber is another viable option as well. An almost obvious reason not to drive a rental car while in San Fran is that the hills are ferocious! And they are everywhere! If you do choose the rental car route, be sure it’s an automatic and not a manual shift.
While in San Francisco, there’s many different options to see or do, but the main thing I suggest everyone does it take the tour to Alcatraz. This is the island that has history from native Americans, to hippies, and to the penitentiary of America’s worst criminals. Al Capone and several other well known mobsters served time on this island before it was shut down. You can sign up for this tour at https://www.getyourguide.com/. You meet up at the area called the Fisherman’s Wharf which is easily found in San Fran. Here you will pick up your tickets if you have not printed them out already and then you can even grab a light brunch before loading onto the boats. The boat ride is no more than 15-20 minutes long to the island and provides great views of the city skyline as well as the Golden Gate Bridge. Be sure to book early as tickets can sell out easy.
Staying in San Francisco can be quite expensive and the rooms not as sizable as one would hope for. In this case, I usually book a hotel in Oakland right over the bridge by the sports complex. The prices are much cheaper and the rooms are more spacious. But if you don’t mind spending a few hundred dollars a night, then I suggest booking around Union Square. It’s centrally located within walking distance to everything. There are plenty of great restaurants to choose from depending on your craving. For great seafood, check out Scoma’s Restaurant down at Fisherman’s Wharf. You really can’t go wrong with this place and the customer service is excellent. If you go to San Fran during baseball season then AT&T Park is right down the street and you should surely catch a game. The atmosphere is incredible and the Giants are a fun team to watch right now. If you go during football season, I personally would suggest trying to catch a Raiders game before they relocate to Las Vegas or you can head down to the new Levi Stadium to catch a 49er’s game. But if you so happen to come during basketball season, then you absolutely should catch a Warriors game! Even if you are not a sports fan, this experience will blow you away! Not only are the Golden State Warriors one of the greatest teams ever assembled, but the excitement and energy that goes on in Oracle Arena is unlike any other. Tickets are a little pricey rightfully so, but again, it’s worth it!
Temperatures in Northern Cali can drop pretty low depending on the time of year. During the summer, even at night sometimes it may require a light jacket to be worn. But during the day it can be very hot but without humidity like you would find in Florida sort a say. If you travel to San Francisco during the Fall or Winter, be sure to pack a heavy coat because the water surrounding San Fran makes it pretty cold. As for crime, you should be fine in downtown San Fran as long as you don’t wander off to South San Fran. Some of those areas can get rough. Likewise with Oakland, be sure to vigilant and don’t walk alone at night. I personally have walked alone through certain areas of Oakland and San Fran but I’ll admit that I was taking a gamble. I will say that Oakland is one city in the world that lives up to it’s reputation for sure, so be smart.
